I recently finished a couple of hats and gifted them to my dear friends Don and Stephanie, who came for an always-to-short visit this week. I thoroughly enjoyed knitting both of these hats and I think they both fit the recipients' personalities quite well.
Stephanie is classic and stylish and loves anything vintage. So, this little flapper-inspired hat was perfect for her.
I knitted it in Briar Rose Fibers Glory Days dyed in dark tones to contrast and compliment Stephanie's beautiful hair. The hat pattern is the Welted Toque in the book Weekend Hats. I knit this up on size 6 needles.
Don is artsy, fun and a little bit quirky. He was the perfect candidate for the Wanderer Cap by Jared Flood (also in Weekend Hats), since Don was still wearing a simple ribbed hat that I made him almost eight years ago. That poor hat was stretched out and very "loved". It was just time for a new hat. So, I knitted this one up in Briar Rose Fibers Abundance in burnt orange tones.
I also gifted the remainder of the Abundance hank to Don, with which he is learning to knit his first scarf to match his new hat. I love it when people embark on learning the skill of knitting. I especially love it when guys try it out. It's just cool.
Are you a knitter? Not a knitter, but always wanted to try it? Maybe it's a goal you've made for 2012? Well, Briar Rose Fibers wants to wish you a Happy New Year and support you in your knitting goals with a little giveaway. Just leave a comment on this post. Tell me how long you've been knitting—or if you'd like to learn—and I'll choose one person (by random number generator) to receive $50 in credit in the Briar Rose Fibers online store!
Leave comments until 12:00am, midnight (Central Time), Friday, January 20th, 2012. Winners will be chosen and announced January 21st, 2012.
Good luck and happy knitting!

Hello from Greece:) My grand/grand mother taught me the basics when i was 11. I liked to make scarves for my dolls and when i was making a mistake and had holes, i used them as a vest for them (is that the correct word?) I would like to start again, and thank you because you made me go back, so sweet memories...
Sounds like a great give-a-way!
I've been knitting for 13 years. I taught myself, and I've never looked back. I mostly knit socks, sweaters, and shawls. But, every once in a while I get on a hat or scarf kick. I don't knit a lot of mittens, and I've never knit gloves...maybe I should give that a try! :)
Hello! I taught myself to knit 8 years ago and never looked back! I just finished a lovely cowl using Briar Rose Fourth of July. I get tons of compliments on it!
Hi! I have been knitting for seven or eight years. I like making fingerless mittens. I LOVE Briar Rose yarn. I have made a few projects out her yarn.
Hello from Southern Wisconsin. I was taught how to knit at a little local shop in Menonomee Falls in 2004. I love to knit warm socks, hats and scarfs. Knitting was a relief from school.
I've been knitting since I was six...so, what's that? Um ...48 years. Omg. Anyway, briar rose yarn would be a great treat!
Love seeing the picture of Stephanie and the great hats you've made, Amy! I've been knitting about 7 years (I think, I'm pretty sure I started when Emily was a baby, but it's hard to remember...) I mostly knit scarves because I get lazy and don't want to think. This year I'd like to finish the second pair of fingerless gloves I started and maybe make a funky hat.
I have been knitting for about 8 years and I am totally hooked! I am also a fan of Briar Rose. Beautiful yarn!
I've been knitting since September of 2007!!! I returned from a cross country trip moving my youngest to California to live - and decided I was not falling prey to the gloom of "empty nest" and decided to fill my time with a new hobby.
Little did I realize that hobby would turn into a passion!!
Now I seldom have down time that I don't have knitting needles in hand.
Beautiful hats! I have knit envy of you! I can knit, don't like it much because I don't do it well! Need some lessons!! LOL BUT, I am an avid crocheter of everything from hats, to baby sweaters and afghans, slippers etc. Would love this prize!!!
I learned at my local community arts council in 1997. I love your yarns.
I learned as a Girl Scout many (many) years ago, but re-learned about 7 years ago. Chris makes beautiful yarns!
I learned to knit as a teenager, taught by my mother - but stopped until about 5 years ago - Picked it back up because I wanted hand knit socks. 50+ pairs later, and plans for more....
I learned to knit when I was a kid - possibly in the Brownies in the 60s. I didn't learn to purl until I was in college. : )
I taught myself how to knit from a tiny 2 page pamphlet during a train ride home from the East Coast. I don't think I've put down my knitting needles since then!
I learned the basics at a LYS and this year will be my 10th anniversary! Knitting has brought a wonderful new dimension to my life, and not a day goes by where I don't knit a little each day. Since then, I have learned by taking on more challenging projects each time, including colorwork, intarsia, socks, and lace. I love giving knitted gifts to my loved ones.
I've been knitting for at least 40 years... and I love those hats!
teabird on Ravelry
I have been knitting for about 5 years and spinning for a couple. I am a fiber fanatic ! And I love Briar Rose!
I've been knitting since I was eight years old, when I had lessons from the lovely knitting store down the block from my family's house. I'm 22 now, and I've never stopped. Gorgeous hats you've made there, too!
I've been knitting for at least 40 years and 3 years ago learned to spin. Recently finished spinning some Briar Rose fiber purchased at Rhinebeck. Lovely!!!! What a fun Giveaway!
I have been knitting since high school when my mom made me take 4-H. I'm so glad she did because I love it!
I love the hats! I've been knitting for 11 or 12 years. My mom taught me and my youngest brother one year at Christmas. I don't think my brother knits anymore but I've been knitting ever since.
Love the flapper hat! I taught myself how to knit around ten years ago when I was alone for Christmas.
Learned as a child, went away for awhile, then came back around 2006. Love Briar Rose yarns!!
I've probably been knitting for 4 years now but just recently picked up double pointed needles for the first time to take on my first pair of socks. I heart Briar Rose and am thrilled to have discovered your blot!
I've been knitting for a little of 20 years. I used to exclusively make sweaters but lately I've branched out into hats, scarves, cowls, mitts and shawls. Next on my list of projects to tackle: socks!
I learned to knit in my early 20's and I am now nearly 50. I didn't begin to knit seriously until my second son was born so I have been knitting seriously for about 17 years. Whew -- it doesn't seem that long until I think about this way.
Not counting my mother trying to teach me at age 8, on size 2 needles with skinny yarn (pink and ugly); I've been knitting since college. 32 years.
That Welted Toque is just darling :)
I learned to knit 30 years ago. But being left handed back then made it tricky, so I didn't make more then scarves. With the internet world I have been able to teach myself how to do more then the basic knit stitch. So really I've been knitting for 8 years now.
My sister taught me the basics 7 years ago, and the rest I learned from books and YouTube!
Your hats are beautiful, as are Briar Rose Fibers!
I am almost 11 years old and my Mom is teaching me to knit. I have been trying for the past 5 months.
I have been knitting non-stop for 7 years. Taught the very basics by my grandmother. Love Chris' yarn and roving...luckily I get to sample knit for her from shawls to hats to mittens. People always ask me what yarn I'm using when I knit in public.
What wonderful fibers! I've been a knitter for 5 and a half years and a spinner for 1 and a half. So I would love to win so I can spin then knit.
Been knitting since jr high, but only fanatically for the past ten years. Ah, obsession . . .
I'd love to learn, but I am mainly interested on behalf of my friend, a knitter of 6+ years. She's made some fantastic pieces for me and for my family, and I'd love to win this on her behalf. Thanks! ~Cee~

I started knitting 3 1/2 years ago, but really picked up speed when I broke my ankle and used it for pain control.I learned the knit stitch when I was a child, but it didn't stick. Now it is my passion.
I first learned to knit close to 40 years ago, when I was just a little girl. I stopped for many years, but picked it back up again 14 years ago when my son was born. I love, love, love your yarns.
I am a self taught knitter. Cast on the first stitch a couple of years ago. Still a lot to learn...but having fun along the way.
I learned to knit when I was 13 (a LONG time ago). I didn't start knitting seriously until about 8 years ago, and now I can't stop!
I love the yarn! I buy some every year at Shepherds Harvest in MN!
I learn to knit 6 years ago from a DVD from Target. I knit all sorts of things now, but I love hats. I made a shawl out of Glory Days. It was awesome.
Hello -- what a nice give-away. I've been knitting for about 20 years and have a bucket list of projects for the next 100 years!
I started knitting about 8 years ago...and haven't stopped!
I learned to knit in 2005, and have been obsessed ever since. I took a beginner class at Michael's, and then found out that there were stores just dedicated to selling yarn (my LYS was amazing) and took a sock making class there. I discovered Briar Rose at a local fiber fest and truly fell in love with the yarn, and found Chris to be an amazingly talented and kind person. I have sweaters, shawls, hats and socks all knit from her yarn, and a comfy stash to knit more from this year :)
Hi! I've been knitting for the better part of 50 years (yikes!), since I was 5. My mother taught me the basic sweater, scarf, blanket knitting, but I then got hooked on lace knitting about 3 years ago and can't get enough. I LOVE BRF yarns and have made many wonderful projects using them!
Both those hats are beautiful, and the yarn is gorgeous. I've been wanting to try out new yarn from independent dyers, so I hope the Random Number Generator chooses me!
A few years ago at the Wisconsin Sheep festival I followed a women around Chris's booth because she had a skein of yarn I wanted and when she realized it she handed it to me, she said here its yours. Thanks Jody
I have been knitting for 30 years and am still learning...
lovely giveaway! ive been knitting for almost 2 years now and i dont know what i would do without this skill..everytime i pick up my needles i learn something new :).. raineoc@yahoo.com
I learned to knit and spin in 2009 AFTER I bought my first Alpacas in 2008. I have been enjoying Chris's yarn and roving since the very beginning of my Fiber Arts Adventures and would LOVE the chance for more of her gorgeous goodies.
BTW, LOVE those hats. I may have to knit the cap for my husband. LOVE it in that orange blend yarn.
I love your yarns ~ I've been knitting for 30 years. xxoo Marianne
I've been knitting for about 6 years now and have enjoyed every moment. I caught the knitting bug when I saw a friend knitting and decided that I wanted to knit too! Hats and lace shawls are my go-to projects.
My wonderful husband gave me a spinning wheel for Christmas so I ordered a huge bump of fiber from Briar Rose. It came quickly and spun up beautifully. I must have more. I just have to stop spinning long enough to knit it up.
Hi, I'm Jen and I've been knitting for 7 years. I made a CPH with Abundance and it's gorgeous!
I've been knitting for about 5 years. I used to be addicted to hats, but now I've shift to mittens. I hope to do my first sweater soon.
Hi! I re-started knitting about 15 years ago after a long hiatus. My Nana taught me at first when I was little. A lot of teddy bear scarves and Breyer horse blankets were knit! At the moment I have an obsession with mobius cowls.
I taught myself to knit 30+ years ago while in graduate school at Berkeley, from EZ's Knitting without Tears. I started knitting again a few years ago, then discovered Ravelry and have developed so much as a knitter ... and stasher ;-)
My most recent BRF acquisition was enough Abundance in Try-works 2 to make a Try-works sweater
How Nice! I've been knitting for about 4 years. Using your Mom's Abundance right now for a new central park hoodie. I love to teach people how to knit and introduce them to great yarn!
I've been knitting since November of 2005 soooo, 6 years. I can't imagine life without knitting.
Stephanie! Love the pic! 60 comments, Amy! Soon you will be at Pioneer Woman status!
I have been knitting for about 6 years now and it's been a downward fall from there, with spinning and rigid heddle weaving being added to the mix.
I've been knitting for 22 years this January. Wow. Not quite half my life, but gaining on it all the time. :)
